The powerful Presa Canario is the result of crossing the now extinct Bandino Majero and British Mastiffs to create a dog specifically for fighting. Originating in the Canary Islands, the Presa was popular as a fighter there until the 1940's when fighting was banned. The Presa was put to work shepherding and guarding but interest in the breed declined and the Presa faced extinction. However, at the start of the 1970's,interest was renewed in preserving this breed, a breed club was established and in time the Presa was recognized by the (FCI).
Temperament: Despite his size, the Presa is quiet and subdued in his home. Loyal, devoted to his family and eager to please, he makes an excellent home guardian. He is suspicious of strangers and should be socialized early so it doesn't become aggressive towards other dogs.

Height/ Weight: The Presa should stand from 21.5-25.5 in (55-67cm) and weigh 85-125lb (38.5-56.5 Kg).
Coat: The coat is short and somewhat wiry in texture.
Color: The coat is usually brindle ranging from dark to light grey, fawn, red and black. Uniform colors from sand to dark ochre is also accepted, all with minimal amount of white markings.
